May 2008 Archives

In March 2005 I spent a week in Lábnyik (Vladnic), a Csángó village in Moldavia accompanying some enthusiastic young people who decided to help preserving the knowledge of Hungarian language among the village youth. Csángós are of Hungarian origin (their name stems from a dialectic form of the word "migrate"), and their religion is Roman Chatolic in contrast with the neighbouring peoples living east of the Carpathians. They speak an archaic dialect of Hungarian, that, as said, resembles of the state of the language in the middle ages.
2005 márciusában egy hetet töltöttem egy Lábnyik (Vladnic) nevű moldvai csángó faluban, csatlakozva néhány lelkes fiatalhoz, akik célul tűzték ki a magyar nyelvtudás megőrzését a csángó ifjúság körében. A csángók magyar eredetű szigetet alkotnak a Kárpátokon túli románság között, vallásuk pedig római katolikus, ami szintén szokatlan a Kárpátoktól keletre. Érdekes, archaikus magyar nyelven beszélnek, mely, mint mondják, a középkori nyelvi állapotokat jeleníti meg.

Browsing through the photoblogs at the Open Directory, I found some real gems, which I share here.

There is the quite interesting and inspirational photoblog of Eric Cotter, called OcularStasis, after seeing his pictures it's time to get deFocused
or immerse yourself in the exciting world of the F blog. Some cities definitely worth visiting. No doubt, Barcelona is among them. I spent there a week last year just clearing my thoughts, without a camera. Not like Carlos at Barcelona Photoblog.
I've always liked backcountry America (never been there), so I really enjoy this Pennsylvanian photoblog.
I like the colors and forms of "The Oswegan", and I think there is an important quote of his, which I hereby cite:
"There is, however, one theme that I try to keep consistent throughout my body of work, and that is the concept of "wabi-sabi". The idea that each thing, scene, or situation, has an essence, and no matter how imperfect, impermanent and incomplete it is, the beauty of that essence can be captured and shown. Thus, whenever I make an image, I try to think about the essence of what I am seeing, and how I might show it's beauty and simplicity."

An interesting film-style photoblog, the fiftymillimeter. Buildings, fisheye, whatever...   Darkness, faces, motion, grain, and darkness again - pushing primitives.
Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll here.
Nice BW images, it's a shame that the blog is discontinued: ACHROMATIC.
Candid BW shots at the strangely named 2038.cc and its sister minorshadows.net.
Creative, colorful, varied: citying.
Nice, painting-like pictures of Tim Gasperak
with a pleasing old-school webdesign.
Professional kids photographing by Australian photographer Barb 'Jinky' Uil in painfully vibrant colors here and a blog here - I like it!
Welcome to The Snowsuit Effort - photographs of homeless people with quotes. Worths spending some time or more...
The Narrative. Simply browse it. Surprise will always be around somewhere...
Fine images with sophisticated post-processing at Chromasia.
