Many of the participants have asked me, whether they can see the images made during the competition.
Csángós of Moldavia

In March 2005 I spent a week in Lábnyik (Vladnic), a Csángó village in Moldavia accompanying some enthusiastic young people who decided to help preserving the knowledge of Hungarian language among the village youth. Csángós are of Hungarian origin (their name stems from a dialectic form of the word "migrate"), and their religion is Roman Chatolic in contrast with the neighbouring peoples living east of the Carpathians. They speak an archaic dialect of Hungarian, that, as said, resembles of the state of the language in the middle ages.
2005 márciusában egy hetet töltöttem egy Lábnyik (Vladnic) nevű moldvai csángó faluban, csatlakozva néhány lelkes fiatalhoz, akik célul tűzték ki a magyar nyelvtudás megőrzését a csángó ifjúság körében. A csángók magyar eredetű szigetet alkotnak a Kárpátokon túli románság között, vallásuk pedig római katolikus, ami szintén szokatlan a Kárpátoktól keletre. Érdekes, archaikus magyar nyelven beszélnek, mely, mint mondják, a középkori nyelvi állapotokat jeleníti meg.

Photoblogs I.

Browsing through the photoblogs at the Open Directory, I found some real gems, which I share here.

There is the quite interesting and inspirational photoblog of Eric Cotter, called OcularStasis, after seeing his pictures it's time to get deFocused

or immerse yourself in the exciting world of the F blog. Some cities definitely worth visiting. No doubt, Barcelona is among them. I spent there a week last year just clearing my thoughts, without a camera. Not like Carlos at Barcelona Photoblog.
I've always liked backcountry America (never been there), so I really enjoy this Pennsylvanian photoblog.
I like the colors and forms of "The Oswegan", and I think there is an important quote of his, which I hereby cite:
"There is, however, one theme that I try to keep consistent throughout
my body of work, and that is the concept of "wabi-sabi". The idea that
each thing, scene, or situation, has an essence, and no matter how
imperfect, impermanent and incomplete it is, the beauty of that essence
can be captured and shown. Thus, whenever I make an image, I try to
think about the essence of what I am seeing, and how I might show it's
beauty and simplicity."

An interesting film-style photoblog, the fiftymillimeter. Buildings, fisheye, whatever... Darkness, faces, motion, grain, and darkness again - pushing primitives.
Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll here.
Nice BW images, it's a shame that the blog is discontinued: ACHROMATIC.
Candid BW shots at the strangely named 2038.cc and its sister minorshadows.net.
Creative, colorful, varied: citying.
Nice, painting-like pictures of Tim Gasperak

with a pleasing old-school webdesign.
Professional kids photographing by Australian photographer Barb 'Jinky' Uil in painfully vibrant colors here and a blog here - I like it!
Welcome to The Snowsuit Effort - photographs of homeless people with quotes. Worths spending some time or more...
The Narrative. Simply browse it. Surprise will always be around somewhere...
Fine images with sophisticated post-processing at Chromasia.
"dailysnap is photography from jessyel ty gonzalez's life. he lives in denver, colorado with his wife and wiener dog"

Luck stroke unexpected when a friend of mine (who has a now abandoned blog here) got a job in Norway and gave me his plane ticket to Paris (and back from Geneva). Everything was perfect. Accomodation at friends. And a nice travel-mate, Attila, a young architect, who (for the curious) now works here. That was the time I began to admire modern architecture. Thanks, Attila.

Premature babies

I spent a few days at a clinical department for prermature babies on assignment for the Heti Válasz magazine. It was a confusing situation. The machines were constantly beeping, I didn't know where to turn, and in every single second I felt I'm in the way of somebody. The most shocking experience was a reanimation, maybe on the first day. I just stood there and watched. No pictures were made that time...
The photos were published on a flash page with the bank account number of the Foundation for Premature Baby Care.

Scotland visit, november 2007

Let me start from the beginning. My ex-girlfriend, Kriszta got a job in Scotland. She booked a ticket for one of those cheap flights, which was quite cheap, but had some luggage weight restrictrions. So we shared luggage - strictly prohibited :-) - and flew together.
After we parted I spent a few days in Edinburgh with my friends, then I decided to go hitch-hiking. A friend of mine (we met her on the plane) took me to Stirling, and I began hitch-hiking from there. Everything went well, I met nice people on the way.
I travelled this way to the Isle of Skye, and then (a bakery's delivery guy gave me a lift early in the morning) to Inverness. From there I wanted to go to Aberdeen (where my ex got her "not-quite-a-job", as it seems from now), but I didn't really have luck. So I literally had to catch a bus (good brakes!) to Aberdeen.
I visited later a small hospital in Stracathro, where a friend of mine (and now also my ex-girlfriend) is working. My last nice experience in Scotland was an interesting talk with a shopkeeper girl in a boutique called "Ness" (they have very Scottish but very non-stereotypical clothes, bags etc.).
The weather was really... Scottish... But nevermind, it's the part of the experience...

Homeless in Budapest

Browsing my archives I found some photos made in December 2003, when I accompanied the Malteser Volunteers and photographed homeless people.
I used high speed (ISO 3200) BW negative film, sometimes pushed to ISO 6400, because we went out on the field at night, and to make things worse homeless people tend to live in the darker areas, avoiding the well lit squares and public places.
Above other things, while browsing these images, I learned the importance of taking notes, because from the distance of four years I forgot many details, names, places and feelings.
Besides, the pictures have got a new meaning, as nowadays I'm also working as a volunteer among the Maltesers, serving one day in a month on one of their ambulance units.
